Participation of Angolan designers at DIF Amsterdam 2017
Diversity In Fashion Amsterdam is a fashion event held every year in Amsterdam. The event is a collaboration between designers from different cultures and backgrounds, with the purpose of using fashion to celebrate the diversity, not only culturally, but also in terms of sexual orientation, religion, and gender. Designers use their creations to draw more attention to social issues such as tolerance, caring, acceptance, and respect. Two Angolan designers participated in the event: Dauvia Nijenhuis and Juelma Armando. And I had the privilege of being invited by both to choose the outfits and dress the models for the runway.
Dauvia presented its collection ‘Nontle’, inspired by its African roots and fashion of the 70s and 80s. It was truly revealing to see how her collection perfectly embodied the concept of the event. in the Dauvia’s collection of the 70s and 80s was mainly characterized by romanticism and freedom. But Dauvia, although it was inspired by these two concepts, her collection did not escape the rule of what we accustomed from her, “sophistication and femininity of a woman”.
Juelma’s collection was inspired by current youth and issues with self-confidence. The purpose of the collection was to show innocence, vulnerability, insecurity without breaking self-confidence. The intention was to show that these feelings are human and are part of what we are, they make what we are and they strengthen our personalities, which completely the opposite of how the current youth see these feelings and themselves.
I enjoyed being there, it was an amazing experience and I loved what they showed, both their collections were astonishing. I was so proud of such worthy representatives in event “BIG” as this. I only hope that you enjoy it as much as did. Feel free to share your comments and, do not forget to dream and always fight for the realization of your dreams.
